Steak!

I stopped eating beef in February of 2007 and hence, stopped cooking it as well. The last time I cooked steak was probably in 2006, when I still lived in San Diego. Anyway, a friend and I were grocery shopping and I asked him if he wanted steak for dinner, even though I wasn’t sure if I still knew how to cook it. Turns out I DO! It’s like riding a bike!!

I let the rib-eye steak sit at room temperature while I seasoned it with:

  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Oregano
  • Red pepper flakes
  • Soy sauce
  • Olive oil

Make sure to massage the meat and let it set for 20-30 minutes. In the meantime, you can prepare your sides for the dish. I pan roasted potatoes with salt & pepper, oregano, minced garlic & green onions.

There are several important things to remember when cooking a steak.

  1. Let it sit at room temperature before you cook it. You don’t want to shock the meat!
  2. Cook it on a HOT pan. The hotter, the better.
  3. Once it’s on the pan, DO NOT TOUCH IT! Do not pierce the meat or anything. Punctures = loss of juices!
  4. Only flip it once you see the juices excrete from the top.
  5. Once it’s cooked, remove it from the pan and let it sit on a plate for 5-10 minutes.

Tim wanted it medium rare so I cooked it for 2 minutes on each side and then let it sit for 5-10 minutes. I had prepared a slice of garlic & green onion butter for the steak and topped it off with that prior to serving. He said it was really good!

$ breakdown:

  • $6 for a huge rib eye steak (with the bone)
  • ~$2 for 4 potatoes
